In Brief...
Australian federal government on Friday gave permission to global energy giant, Shell, to build a floating Liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility off Western Australia's north-west coast. Environment Minister Tony Burke approved the Prelude facility in the Browse Basin, which will be moored on the seabed and extract gas from the Prelude gas field,, with strict condition. "This is a large-scale project that is using world-first technology," Burke told Australia Associated Press on Friday. Shell must develop an oil spill contingency plan and specify how it will minimize the risks of oil spills and how it will minimize the environmental impacts in the event of an oil spill. Measures to reduce light pollution, manage noise impacts, introduced marine pests and waste must all be outlined in Shell's operations environment management plan.
